Not too long ago, I found myself in need of a vehicle for a significant journey across Australia. With my limited knowledge of cars, I turned to various Australian car marketplace sites, including Carsales.com, searching for the perfect ride to navigate the vast expanse of the Nullabor.

However, I couldn't help but notice that most platforms could potentially do more to guide users with finding vehicles. Motivated by this observation, I took it upon myself to develop a car application that addresses these shortcomings. One of its key features is a user-friendly wizard aimed at simplifying the daunting task of finding a suitable vehicle. Through my application, I aim to fill the void left by existing platforms like Carsales.com, providing users with more intuitive and personalized recommendations for their automotive needs.

The Process

Research
Reviewed contemporary platforms and interviewed both customer and vendors to understand their needs.
Define
Conducted customer journey mapping to define success with respect to both goals & constraints.
Ideate
Starting out with just a pen and pad the moving into FIGMA I generate low level wireframes.
Design
Create mid & high fidelity wireframes for the platform with an eye to establishing a clear identity.

Research Outcomes

The first step was to research competitors and popular car sales websites, such as CarSales, to get an idea of the current market trends and user behavior. This helped me to understand the current state of the industry and the needs and preferences of users.

I also looked for data on the most popular vehicles in Australia, including their features, price, and performance. This information helped me to understand the most commonly used vehicles in the country and their suitability for different purposes.

Next, I conducted online research to identify the features that users typically consider most important when choosing a vehicle. This included things like fuel efficiency, safety features, and cargo capacity. By analyzing user reviews and surveys, I was able to identify the most important features and incorporate them into the wizard flow.

To develop the wizard flow, I started with ten questions, covering a range of topics such as where the user normally drives and their safety preferences. However, based on feedback from contemporaries, I narrowed down the questions to six, which provided a more focused and streamlined experience for the user. The six questions that I included in the wizard flow covered the user's budget, location, transmission preferences, fuel type, number of passengers, and cargo needs. These questions provided a strong foundation of knowledge that could accurately guide the user to ideal vehicles in their area, whether they were looking for a daily driver, family vehicle, or commercial vehicle.

Chivo
Chivo is a modern and versatile typeface that is legible and easy to read, even at small sizes. This is particularly important for the wizard flow, as it requires users to input a lot of information, and the font needed to be readable for an extended period.

Secondly, Chivo's clean and simple lines make it a great choice for a clean and minimalistic design approach.
Colors
I chose to use a neutral color palette that would create a clean and unobtrusive background, allowing the cars to stand out and take center stage.

The reason behind this decision was that car images typically have a lot of different colors, and using a busy or colorful background could distract the user's attention from the vehicles themselves.
Final Flow & Extras
Laid out below is the wizard flow with a few extra's, just because I like you.
